Hockey 101

Come give hockey a try with Hockey 101! DWHL is proud to offer Hockey 101s for FREE to prospective members. Current members bringing a prospective member can also attend for free.

Hockey 101s include a pre-ice chalk talk, coaches, gear to borrow for the night, and DWHL members on hand to help you get dressed in your gear.

DWHL provides sets of gear to borrow, but we encourage you to register early as sets are limited!

Do I need to know how to skate or play hockey?

You do not need to know how to play hockey - or even skate! Over the course of the evening we will cover some basics of the game and skating.

While it is helpful to have ice skated before it is definitely not required. Many of our current DWHL members started their hockey journey at a Hockey 101 with no prior experience!

What happens at Hockey 101?

When you arrive you'll check-in in the lobby and then head to a meeting room for a Chalk Talk. During the Chalk Talk our coaches will cover some basics such as safety on the ice and how to hold a stick.

Next, you'll head back to the lobby to pick up your gear (if you are borrowing) and get dressed in the locker rooms. We'll have plenty of folks on hand to help you get your gear on properly and ensure it fits.

Then, you'll hit the ice! We'll go through some basics of skating followed by some hockey skill stations. By the end of the night you'll have covered passing, skating, and shooting.

We end each Hockey 101 with a quick scrimmage so you can test out your new skills!

What time do I need to arrive?

Each Hockey 101 will have a different start time, but they all follow the same schedule. Here's an example of the schedule for the night:

• Check-In: 5:15 pm
• Chalk Talk: 5:30 pm - 6:00 pm 
• Dress: 6:00 pm - 6:30 pm
• Ice Time: 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm
